US Japan Workshop 2026 JAEA

US Japan Workshop 2026

Scope

The long-standing collaboration between the US and Japan under the US-Japan Cooperative Program on Neutron Scattering has produced significant achievements in both scientific research and instrument development. Following its restart in 2020 after a decade-long shutdown, JRR-3 has remained in stable operation and has delivered increasing scientific outputs over the past five years. Building on this success, active discussions have been initiated on upgrading the instrument suite of JRR-3. The first target is to meet the strong demand in soft-matter science, which leads to the construction of a new SANS instrument and a major upgrade of the spin-echo spectrometer iNSE. The next step will be a focus on quantum science, targeting single-crystal diffractometers, triple-axis spectrometers, and sample environments. The High-Flux Isotope Reactor, HFIR, at ORNL is also undergoing a number of upgrades across a wide range of instrument programs. Furthermore, the upcoming HFIR beryllium reflector replacement also offers an opportunity to upgrade instruments, as represented by MANTA, a multiplexing backend for the cold triple-axis spectrometer. These developments at JRR-3 and HFIR share several technical challenges and opportunities through their complementarity with the neighboring pulsed-neutron sources, J-PARC MLF and SNS, located on the same campus. Collaborative development and the exchange of knowledge will provide mutual benefits for researchers in both countries. In addition, recent rapid progress in data-driven approaches, including AI and deep learning, is expected to accelerate advances in various areas, including instrument control, experiment planning, data analysis. By bringing together experts and young researchers, this workshop will lay the groundwork for future advancements in neutron scattering.
